“Light is a mystery – an invisible master.  We can’t see or touch it, but it makes almost everything beautiful.  We must have it.  We absorb it – it talks to our bodies and it heals.  Everything we are, see, taste/smell, touch, is infused with light.  Light is endlessly fascinating.”   Evelyn Sahaja

Evelyn Burud Sahaja was fascinated from the time she was a little girl with exploring how things communicate and connect in our world.  She studied chemistry, physics and plays the cello, piano and sings, all of which has deepened her understanding of these connections.  Her mother taught her to cook healthy, and Evelyn’s father, “The Ultimate Mr. Fix It” taught her the complex process of building.  Her father is or was licensed as: a Master Electrician, Inspector, General Contractor, Plumbing, HVAC and low voltage automation contractor.

Although Evelyn Sahaja grew up in the family business, which won Best House over $1million in 1997 & 1998 for low voltage automation by the NV NAHB, she went on to work and travel in other fields.  Her fascination with public policy, led her to a position in Los Angeles with New York Times Best-selling Author, David Horowitz. She planned hundreds of events and media promotions with everyone from the likes of Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to Oscar-nominated Director Lionel Chetwynd and Director David Lynch.

And then Evelyn Sahaja fell in love with light.  She’s designed lighting and control systems for homes, offices, hotels, restaurants, historical buildings and even ecolodges and cities.  Light is a source connection for almost everything in the universe that maintains life – it effects us in the most basic of ways.  We require darkness and light.  Evelyn Sahaja is committed to sharing her passion for light and health.  She is currently working on a Lighting Quality Initiative to make lighting policy more than just energy efficient, but healthy public policy.  Light is part of how we heal, and detoxify.

Part of our connection to Light and our world is via Circadian Rhythm. CR is entrained by the pattern of the solar day and the lunar night, day-to-day and season-to-season.  The 3 main timekeepers of CR are light, temperature, and food.  Evelyn has explored our relationship to food with chefs and farmers in the Napa Valley as well as having her own catering company.  She’s created a line of essential oil therapy chocolates designed to nurture and heal.

Evelyn’s commitment to Light has earned her the collaboration and mentorship of top leaders in the field:  Kevin Willmorth, Creator of Architectural SSL Magazine and Tasca; Deborah Burnett – leading expert on Epi-genetic Design and light’s relationship to Human Health and Disease; and Jim Benya – international daylight expert, Co-Author of the current CA Title 24 energy laws, and winner of nearly every major US lighting design award.

Evelyn Sahaja has over 20 years experience in the design and construction industry.  She has held her Lighting Credential (LC) from the NCQLP (National Council for the Qualifications for the Lighting Professions) since 2006.  Since 2008, she has served as an Advisory Member of the IES (Illuminating Engineering Society of North America) Testing and Procedures Committee – Solid State Lighting Devices (LEDs – Light Emitting Diodes, OLEDs – Organic Light Emitting Diodes, and Quantum Dots, etc…).  At the request of the US DOE (Department of Energy), in relation to the Energy Star rating, this committee establishes the testing and performance standards for all Solid State Lighting Devices relating to quality and performance.  This committee established the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) Lighting Facts Label standard present on the back of all retrofit lamps sold in the US.  For the past 6-7 years, she has served as a Judge for Architectural SSL Magazine’s Annual Product Innovation Awards (PIA).  Her company, InLightIn Design is Dunn & Bradstreet listed.

She has lectured at:  American Planning Association, Arch LED at NeoCon, International Association of Lighting Designers, Napa Valley Forensic Scientists, and Oxbow School.

Her work and writing has appeared in various publications including: Architectural SSL, Electrical Contractor, French Geo, Gastro Lounge Blog, Greeno, House Beautiful, Outside, & The SF Chronicle.
